File Format Descriptions

SVG

SVG is a special image format designed specifically for logos, icons, and simple graphics. Unlike JPG and PNG — which store a picture as a grid of tiny colored dots — an SVG file stores the image as a set of mathematical instructions describing shapes, lines, and colors. The practical benefit of this is that an SVG image can be resized to any dimension without ever losing sharpness or clarity. You can shrink it to fit a business card or enlarge it to fill a billboard, and it will look equally crisp either way. SVG files are also typically very small in size.

Best for: logos and graphics that need to be printed or displayed at many different sizes.

PNG

PNG is a popular image format that preserves sharper detail than JPG, making it a better choice for logos, graphics, and images that contain text. PNG files tend to be a bit larger in size than JPG files, but the image quality is better — especially around edges and lettering. One useful feature of PNG is that it supports transparent backgrounds, meaning the area around your logo can be see-through rather than white. This is handy when placing a logo on a colored flyer or website.

Best for: logos, graphics with text, and images where you need a transparent background.

JPG (also written as JPEG)

JPG is one of the most common image formats you'll find on computers and the internet. It works great for photographs and images with lots of colors and detail. JPG files are compact in size, which makes them easy to share by email or post online. The tradeoff is that some image quality is lost when a file is saved in JPG format — usually not noticeable for photos, but it can cause blurry or "fuzzy" edges on logos and text. JPG images do not support transparent backgrounds.

Best for: photos, social media images, and general everyday use.
